Vote Shay Shine in "Dark Horse Dunker" competition

High Point University senior Shay Shine has been nominated for the "Dark Horse Dunker" competition, which pits 16 under-the-radar players to participate in the Denny's Slam Dunk Competition at the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships in New Orleans March 29 on ESPN.

Shine is known best for his thunderous dunk over UNC Asheville center D.J. Cunningham on Dec. 4, 2010. He took the ball on a fast break and dunked over the 6-foot-10 Cunningham to end the first half in an eventual 76-73 Panther victory.

Shine's dunk over Cunningham was featured as ESPN SportsCenter's No. 1 play of the day, SportsCenter's No. 1 play of the week and it was featured on ESPN SportsNation throughout the rest of the basketball season. The video clip was viewed over 2.5 million times on YouTube and was featured on CBS as a finalist for Papa John's Dunks of the Year during the NCAA Final Four on April 3, 2011.

Shine is originally from Arcadia, Fla., and joined High Point after two years at Iowa Western. In his first season with HPU in 2010-11, Shine averaged 14.3 points and 4.2 rebounds. He set the HPU record for three-point percentage in a game (6-for-6) and free-throw percentage in a game (10-for-10). This season, Shine is averaging 15.0 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, both second on the team.
