HPU men's basketball schedule set for 2011-12

2011-12 HPU Men's Basketball Schedule

The High Point University men's basketball team kicks off its 2011-12 season with a home game against Bridgewater College on Nov. 12, the first of 15 home games for the Panthers this season. High Point hosts Wake Forest on Dec. 7 at the Millis Center.

"Something I've talked about since day one is putting together a competitive schedule and getting quality home games, so we're really excited for the upcoming season," said third-year HPU head coach Scott Cherry. "We have four high-major teams in Purdue, Wake Forest, Marshall and Central Florida – including Wake Forest coming to the Millis Center, which is a huge accomplishment for our University. We also have home quality home games against Tennessee Tech, the Citadel and Wofford along with our Big South schedule. It will be great from a competitive standpoint and it will be great for fans and the community."

High Point's home schedule is one of its best since joining NCAA Div. I, as the Panthers host six non-conference games at the Millis Center in addition to nine Big South games. Along with Wake Forest, HPU hosts Div. I opponents Tennessee Tech (Nov. 22), the Citadel (Nov. 26) and Wofford (Dec. 21). The Wake Forest game will be the first time HPU has ever hosted an ACC men's basketball team at the Millis Center.

The Panthers play their first road game at Purdue on Nov. 14 before traveling to Orlando, Fla., to play Central Florida on Nov. 18. The Panthers also play at Hampton on Nov. 29 and at Marshall on Dec. 17 as well as an ESPN BracketBuster game on the road on Feb. 18.

Four of High Point's 2011-12 opponents played in the NCAA Tournament last season: Purdue, Hampton, Wofford and UNC Asheville. Purdue finished the season ranked 14th in the national RPI.

High Point University opens its Big South schedule against new member Campbell on Dec. 3 in Buies Creek, N.C. High Point hosts Coastal Carolina on Dec. 31 and Charleston Southern on Jan. 2. HPU plays 10 Big South games in January and six in February before playing in the Big South Tournament Feb. 27-March 3.

This year's Big South Tournament will feature all 10 teams in the conference with the addition of an opening round. The tournament will be played Feb. 27 through March 3 and details about the format will be announced soon.

High Point University returns its top three scorers from last season: Nick Barbour, Shay Shine and Corey Law as well as five other returners. The Panthers went 12-19 overall and 7-11 in Big South play. High Point beat Liberty in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament to make its first semifinal appearance in three years.
