July 13, 2010
Incoming freshman Du'Vaughn Maxwell nearly posted a triple-double to lead the East All-Stars to a 98-73 victory over the West in the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star boys' basketball game on July 5 in Hampton, Va. Maxwell had 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks.
A 6-foot-6 forward from Petersburg High School in Petersburg, Va., Maxwell was named the East team's Most Valuable Player.
Maxwell averaged 18.4 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.4 blocks in 2009-10 for Petersburg. He led his team in all three categories. Petersburg went 30-1, losing its only game to Norcom on a buzzer beater in the Virginia AAA state championship game. Maxwell was second-team All-State in VHSCA AAA, which is Virginia’s top division.
Maxwell is one of seven student-athletes who signed National Letters of Intent to join the Panthers this season. He was also recruited by James Madison, Virginia Commonwealth, Hawaii and Robert Morris.
The Panthers finished 15-15 overall and 10-8 in Big South games in 2009-10, showing solid progress over the previous year when HPU went 9-19 and 4-14. HPU’s six-win improvement was second-best in the Big South.
