Jacob Smith of the High Point University men's track & field team was the second collegiate finisher in the 3,000-meter at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet Friday in Blacksburg, Va. Senior
Jevin Monds also ran the mile at the meet.
“Jacob competed well in a very strong field,” said head coach
Mike Esposito. “He led with 400 meters to go and ran a great race. Jevin was also very solid today.”
Smith set a personal best in the 3k with a time of 8:23.07, good for third overall in the event. The top four finishers in the event all came in within two seconds of each other. Auburn's Niklas Buhner finished less than a second ahead of Smith and Jason Cusack, who ran unattached, was right behind in 8:23.14.
Smith bested his previous personal record of 8:27.90 in the 3,000-meter which he ran at Virginia Tech earlier this season.
Monds ran the mile in 4:16.98 and finished 24th in the event. The finish was three seconds off his personal best in the event which he ran in 2010.
The rest of the Panthers will compete Saturday at UNC. The Kent Taylor Invitational will be held at the Eddie Smith Field House. Freshmen
Justin Doehr and
Chris Muggler will run the first two legs of the 4x400 relay. Sophomore
Tristan Faure will run the third leg while freshman
Evan Gingrich will anchor the race.
Doehr will also run the 400-meter while Muggler and Gingrich compete in the 800-meter this weekend. Faure will represent HPU in the long jump and shot put.
Max Coleman and
Eric Plummer are also entered in the long jump.
Sophomore
Evan Emery is after the HPU record in the 60-meter dash. The current record is 6.84 set by
Justin Conaway. Emery's PR in the event is 6.85 which he ran at the Liberty Kickoff in December.
Ryan Venable is also running the 60-meter. Venable and
Alex Fisher will compete in the 60-meter hurdles while Fisher and Emery will run the 200-meter.

John Yankello will run the 3,000-meter and
Dakota Peachee, Mike Feroe,
Mike Ali and
Anthony Kilar will run the mile.
