Virginia Tech Results

Junior Jacob Smith of the High Point University men's track & field team was the second collegiate finisher in the 3,000-meter at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet Friday in Blacksburg, Va. Senior Jevin Monds also ran the mile at the meet.

“Jacob competed well in a very strong field,” said head coach Mike Esposito. “He led with 400 meters to go and ran a great race. Jevin was also very solid today.”

Smith set a personal best in the 3k with a time of 8:23.07, good for third overall in the event. The top four finishers in the event all came in within two seconds of each other. Auburn's Niklas Buhner finished less than a second ahead of Smith and Jason Cusack, who ran unattached, was right behind in 8:23.14.

Smith bested his previous personal record of 8:27.90 in the 3,000-meter which he ran at Virginia Tech earlier this season.

Monds ran the mile in 4:16.98 and finished 24th in the event. The finish was three seconds off his personal best in the event which he ran in 2010.
