Senior
Manika Gamble set a school record in the 60-meter hurdles and
Kelsey Hunt ran a PR in the 3,000-meter to lead the High Point University women's track & field team in action at day one of the UNC Invitational.
"Manika had a bit of a breakthrough tonight," said head coach
Mike Esposito. "Despite a heavy workload tonight she had a great performance in the 60-meter hurdles.
Kelsey Hunt also ran a PR in the 3k and
Audrey Malloy was very solid in the 1,200-meter leg of the DMR. She put the race away very early."
Gamble finished third in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.66, breaking the HPU record in the event, set by Jasmine Jones-Green in 2007. Jones-Green's previous record was 8.67. Gamble won her heat in the preliminaries with a personal-best time of 8.70 before shaving off even more time in the finals for a school record.
Gamble also ran the 60-meter dash. She finished third in her preliminary heat with a time of 7.92 to advance to the finals. In the finals she ran a 7.95 for a seventh place finish.
Hunt ran a personal best time of 10:25.04 in the 3,000-meter. The junior placed fourth in the event, breaking her former PR of 10:33.44 which she ran at UNC last season. Freshmen
Lauren Blackwell and
Krista Willard placed seventh and eighth in the event, respectively. Blackwell ran a 10:46.67 while Willard came in with a time of 11:18.31.
Kelsey Hinchliffe also finished the 3k in 11:45.07.
Audrey Malloy, Emily Fisher, Dorrell and
Kelsey Paine teamed up for a win in the distance medley relay, finishing in 12:39.81.
Senior
Lynee Pina threw the weight 13.2 meters (43-3.75) for a 13th place finish in the event.
Events continue Saturday, beginning with Paine and
Kayleigh Perry in the mile. Gamble and Emily Fisher will also compete in the 200-meter.
Colleen Hollowood will run the 800-meter as well. In the field events
Kaitlin Whittington will be in the triple jump while
Carli Antor,
Veronica Peskosky and
Catelyn Griffin take on the pole vault.
