The High Point University men's soccer team was recognized for its academic achievement by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as it received the 2011 NSCAA Team Academic Award.
“This is a tremendous honor for our team which exemplifies what we try to instill on our players,” head coach
Dustin Fonder said. “We want to work hard and achieve success both on the field and in the classroom. This award is a testament to that work the team has put in.”
The Panthers turned in a 3.07 team GPA in 2010-11, winning the award for the second-straight season and the third time since moving up to Division I.
The national coaches governing body annually hands out the academic honor to schools whose team grade point average is 3.0 or higher and the most recent accolade is for the 2010-11 academic year.
High Point bounced back from a difficult start to the season to finish a .500 in 2011 with a 9-9-3 record. The Panthers were undefeated in their final five games, going 4-0-1, including a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 win over VCU on national TV in the Fox Soccer/NSCAA National Game of the Week. Sophomore
Alex Martinez finished second in the conference with 11 goals and 24 points, leading an HPU offense which scored 36 goals in 21 games.
