The High Point University volleyball team has added three recruits for 2012, head coach
Jason Oliver announced Monday. The group includes middle blocker Savannah Angel, libero Annemarie Chin and defensive specialist Wavie Chin.
“The 2012 recruiting class is one that assistant coach
Stephanie Ross and I are very excited about,” Oliver said. “All three of these student-athletes possess great skill and volleyball IQ and bring a physical presence to the floor. The most impressive aspect in all three is their character, championship mentality, and work ethic. The expectations for High Point volleyball were raised with this group committing. As a coach that is a really exciting prospect and makes me want to work harder for another Big South Championship.”
Angel is a 6-foot, 3-inch middle from Rock Hill, S.C. who earned All-State honors after leading Northwestern High School in blocks, kills and service aces in 2011. MaxPreps.com ranked her the second best blocker in South Carolina and she was named the Region AAAA Player of the Year. Angel is a two-time team MVP and three-time recipient of the Trojan Athletics Academic Excellence Award.
Angel played on the 2011 USA Volleyball High Performance Team in an international tournament in Tucson, Ariz. where she helped the team to a bronze medal against competition from China, Dominican Republic, Peru and other USteams. Last year she played for the Piedmont Volleyball Club with current Panther
Chelsea Davis. This season she will play on the Carolina Union Volleyball Club.
“Savannah is probably the most accomplished player this program has ever recruited,” Oliver said. “Her talent, natural ability and drive to be great that made her a very highly recruited player. She is physical at the net and her work ethic and desire to learn inspires me to be a better coach. We have just begun to see what she is capable of and I am excited to help her begin the process of achieving a level she never thought she could.”
The Chins join High Point from Leon High School in Tallahassee, Fla. where they won the 2011 Florida 6A State Championship. As freshman their junior varsity teams was a perfect 25-0 and as sophomores on varsity they went to the Florida 5A State Finals. In 2011 their club team won silver at the 17U AAU National Championship.
Annemarie will be a libero/defensive specialist for High Point after coming up with 566 digs for Leon in 2011. Her career high is 42 digs in a match. She was named first team All-Big Bend and was selected to the Florida Athletics Coaches Association All-State team in 2011. Annemarie collected All-Tournament honors at the Festival Orlando, Berkeley Prep and St. Charles Mizuno Cup Chicago tournaments.
“When people watch a High Point volleyball match they will remember Annemarie.” Oliver said. “She has an ability to be in the right place at the right time and make the extremely hard plays look routine. When recruiting her, the thing that stood out above everything else is her ability to play at a high mental level and that is something great liberos all have to possess.”
Wavie is an outside hitter and defensive specialist and three-year varsity starter. She was a co-captain as a senior posting 262 kills and 370 digs. She was a 2011 first team All-Big Bend selection and the 2010 team MVP. She also earned MVP honors on the JV undefeated team as a freshman.
“Wavie is a fun player to watch. Her court awareness and volleyball skill is really hard to find in a player so young,” Oliver said. “Her confidence, championship mentality, toughness and hard work is second to none. All of these things help her make amazing plays. I can wait to get her in the gym and see just what she is capable of at this level.”
