FINAL RESULTS
The High Point University men's golf team shot a combined 302 on Tuesday to finish second out of eight teams in the Stetson Invitational with a three-round total of 893 at the Victoria Hills Golf Club in Deland, Fla.
Chase Wilson carded a 71 for the third-straight round to finish second with a 54-hole score of 213.
“I thought we might have played a little better than we did today,” head coach #J.B. White# said. “We seemed to have things going in a good direction yesterday and I hoped that would carry over. Unfortunately, the golf course was set up much tougher today. The fact that we held on to second was a pretty good deal. We still have some short game issues we will need to sort out over the break in preparation for the spring.”
Wilson was second in the tournament field with 15 birdies through three rounds to finish three-strokes under par. Senior
Curtis Brotherton joined Wilson in the top 10 after shooting a 74 on Tuesday to jump into a tie for 10th with a three-round score of 224 (75-75-74).
Freshman
Sam Stewart carded an 80 for the day to drop into 18th with a total score of 229 (77-72-80). Freshman
Charles Valluzzo turned in a 79 on Tuesday to finish the tournament with a total score of 232 (76-77-79) and in a tie for 24th with senior
Thomas McLellan (80-74-78) who carded a 78 in the third and final round.
Florida Gulf Coast maintained its lead in the team standings, shooting a third-round 293 to finish in first with a total combined score of 870. Host Stetson and Bethune Cookman tied for third with identical scores of 899, six strokes back of HPU. Appalachian State rounded out the top five with a three-day score of 903.
Stetson's Sam Ryder turned in his third-straight round under par on Tuesday with a three-under 69 to win the individual medal with a score of 207. Wilson earned runner-up honors after finishing six-strokes back of Ryder and two-strokes better than Florida Gulf Coasts' Alex Medinis who carded a third-round 72 for a 54-hole total of 215.
The Stetson Invitational concludes High Point's 2011 fall schedule. The Panthers will return to action in the spring of 2012.
