High Point University has added Austin Icaza as a volunteer assistant strength & conditioning coach in the HPU Athletic Department, announced head strength & conditioning coach Tim Teefy. Icaza recently graduated from Bridgewater College in Virginia where he served as a volunteer assistant after completing his eligibility on the football team.
“Austin is a great addition to our staff,” Teefy said. “As a recent collegiate athlete, he will add a great perspective of the student-athlete to our program. The addition of Austin, also demonstrates the continue effort of the athletic department to further our department and enhance the student athlete's way of life.”
Icaza will assist Teefy and assistant strength & conditioning coach Mike Rhoades, working primarily with the lacrosse, baseball, men's and women's golf and track & field and cross country teams.
While at Bridgewater College, Icaza was a volunteer assistant strength & conditioning coach. He helped oversee and implement the speed and agility program for the football team and provided instruction and assistance for Olympic lifting techniques.
Icaza was a captain and starter on the Bridgewater football team, earning All-Conference honors as a defensive lineman in 2008 and 2009. While at Dacula High School in Georgia, Icaza was a State 5A Weightlifting Champion and won the Georgia Strongest Man Award.
Icaza graduated from Bridgewater in May 2010 with a degree in Health and Exercise Science.
