High Point University senior
Scott Rojo was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week on Monday. Rojo was recognized after a one goal and three assist performance in the 4-0 win over Gardner-Webb.
Rojo, a forward, scored the first goal of the match to put HPU on the board in the third minute, running onto a cross from sophomore
Shawn Sloan and banging it through the hands of the diving keeper. Rojo then returned the favor, assisting Sloan on goals in the 16th and 18th minute, both off free kicks. On the first goal, Rojo took a slight touch before Sloan hit a superb bender from almost 30-yards out. The senior then set Sloan free down the left with a through ball which the sophomore ran onto before hitting it across the face of goal into the far-side netting. Rojo picked up his final assist in the 67th minute, leading a counterattack before crossing to junior
Karo Okiomah for the score.
Rojo's three assists are a new High Point Division I single-game record. The senior now has 17 assists in his career which is also an HPU Division I record. The previous record of 16 career assists was set last season by
Matt Tuttle. Rojo leads the Panthers with nine points on two goals and five assists this season.
High Point is off to its best start in the school's Division I era this season at 4-2-1 and is ranked 46th in Top Drawer Soccer's Tournament 48, which predicts the participants in this season's NCAA Tournament. The Panthers have outscored opponents by a margin of 14-7 and posted four shutouts. The team continues its three-game home stand this week against regional rival UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, Sept. 28, and Richmond on Saturday, Oct. 2.
