The Big South Conference office recently announced the list of 2009-10 Presidential Honor Roll recipients, with 116 High Point University student-athletes receiving the designation. HPU finished second overall with 57.4 percent of its student-athletes honored.

"We are very proud of all of our student-athletes and the character with which they handle themselves both on and off the field," said HPU Athletic Director Craig Keilitz. "They have done a great deal in their competitions to create a winning environment here at HPU but what we are most proud of is what they accomplish academically. That is the No. 1 reason they are here, to get their degree, and each semester they continue to improve in the classroom."

The women's track & field and cross country teams combined to have 22 representatives receive the distinction, followed closely by the women's soccer team with 17. The men’s soccer team had 15 honorees while the volleyball, men’s track and baseball teams each had 12.

"We are extremely proud of the work these student-athletes have put in to succeed in the classroom," said Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Women's Administrator April Wines who oversees HPU's Academic Support Program. "Their accomplishments are a credit to themselves, their teams and the entire athletic department.”

To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently-completed academic year. The Big South as a whole placed 1,394 out of 3,043 student-athletes on the Presidential Honor Roll. The 45.8 percentage marks the highest percentage since 2003 and is the sixth-straight year above the 40 percent threshold.

The 2009-10 season was a successful one for the Panthers both in the classroom and on the playing field as the women’s soccer won its third Big South Championship since 2003, men’s cross country finished runner-up at the conference championship and baseball and men's soccer each recorded their best seasons in Division I play.
