Hogan Nance (Hilton Head, S.C./Walter Williams ) of the High Point University men’s golf team competed in the US Amateur Public Links Championship in Greensboro, N.C., finishing in a tie for 103rd with a 10-over 152. Nance stood in a tie for 29th place with a 72 on the first day before shooting a nine-over 80 on day two.
Nance started on the back nine on day one and birdied 14, 15, 16 and 18to put himself three under at the turn. A double and two bogeys on the front nine brought Nance to one over on the day, seven shots behind leader Derek Ernst.
John-Tyler Griffen finished first at the end of stroke play with a two-round score of 133, one stroke better than Ernst.
After redshirting as a freshman, Nance has played in six events for the Panthers in his three seasons, earning a career-best finish of sixth at the 2010 WSSU Invitational this past spring.
Following the second round of stroke play on Tuesday, the low 64 scorers will advance into match play. The championship concludes Saturday with a scheduled 36-hole final. The U.S. Amateur Public Links, established in 1922 for bona fide public-course players, is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. The winner of the APL traditionally receives an invitation to the Masters.
