Sophomore
Shawn Sloan of the High Point University men's soccer team was named to the ESPN Academic All-American third team the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday.
The midfielder is carrying a 4.00 GPA as a chemistry major.
“This is a tremendous honor for Shawn,” head coach
Dustin Fonder said. “He embodies everything we look for as a student athlete here at High Point University. He is a true talent on the field, but even more importantly, he is a driven student and a person of high moral character.”
Sloan finished 2010 second in the Big South with eight assists on the season. The Geneva, Ill., native had 24 points with eight goals to go along with his eight assists. He has 14 goals and 10 assists in two seasons with HPU. The sophomore is currently tied for fifth in assists, sixth in points and tenth in goals in the High Point Division I career record book.
Sloan is just the second High Point player to earn Academic All-American honors in the team's Division I era. Chris Archer was named to the ESPN Academic All-American second team in 2006.
