Tarver completing internship with WNBA's Atlanta Dream
July 8, 2009
Whitney Tarver, a guard on the High Point University women's basketball team, has landed a summer internship with the Atlanta Dream of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Tarver is a senior majoring in Sport Management at HPU.
Tarver's responsibilities include handling donation requests, and coordinating community appearances and post-game autograph sessions, among other things. She works in multiple departments in addition to community relations, such as media and public relations, because of the smaller size of the organization.
She has also had the chance to work closely with the Power of Girls mentoring program by planning "Power Lessons" and "Power Trips" designed to help girls preparing to enter high school learn valuable lessons in communication, self-esteem, appearance and more.
"I'm having a great time with my internship," Tarver said. "It is preparing me for a career in the front office of a sports team."
On the court, Tarver played in seven games for the Panthers in 2008-09. She had a career-best eight points against Emory & Henry in 16 minutes of playing time, helping HPU to a win on Nov. 16. Tarver is a Millis Scholar-Athlete.
The High Point University women's basketball team went 15-16 overall and 10-6 in the Big South in 2008-09. The Panthers return nearly their entire roster from a year ago. The upcoming season will be Tooey Loy's ninth as head coach of HPU women's basketball.
