Freshman midfielder
Shawn Sloan (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) of the High Point University men’s soccer team was named the Big South Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Sloan scored two goals in 33 seconds in the Panthers’ 4-0 win at VMI.
Sloan’s first goal came in the 59th minute when a give and go with junior
Scott Rojo (Houston, Texas/Lee) gave him the ball on the left side of the box behind the defense. Sloan then beat the goalie with a good strike into the far-side netting. Less than a minute later, Sloan received the ball just passed midfield and beat the Keydet right back with his dribble before sending a hard shot past the goalie and into the net.
Sloan leads the Panthers with five goals and 12 points in his first collegiate season. He is currently tied for fifth in the conference in goals and seventh in the conference in points.
This is the second Big South honor for High Point this season. Senior
Matt Tuttle (Winston-Salem, N.C./Reynolds) was named Big South Player of the Week on Oct. 6, after scoring two goals and recording an assist against Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville.
High Point returns to Vert Stadium on Wednesday, Nov. 4, to host Liberty in the final conference game of the season for both squads. The Panthers are currently tied with Winthrop for first-place in the Big South with one game remaining for both teams in conference play.
