Panthers in ninth after day one of Hummingbird Intercollegiate

DAY ONE RESULTS

The High Point University men’s golf team shot a combined 292 in the first round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate to finish tied for ninth out of 18 teams at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley in Sapphire, N.C., Monday. Sophomore Curtis Brotherton (High Point, N.C./Ledford) shot a one-under 70 in the opening 18 to finish the day tied for eighth.

Junior Nick Goins (Winston-Salem, N.C./Ledford) finished two strokes back of Brotherton in a tie for 25th with a first day 72 while freshman Chase Wilson (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) shot a 73 to finish tied for 36th. Junior Evan LaRocque (Toronto, Ontario/Heritage Academy) finished day one in a tie for 83rd with a first-round score of 77. Junior DJ Dougherty (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) struggled in day one, shooting an opening-round 80 to finish last among HPU golfers in a tie for 96th.

Kentucky leads the 18-team field after carding a five-under 279 to lead second-place, Furman, by three strokes. Tournament host, Western Carolina, is amidst a three-way tie for third at 286, seven strokes off the pace tied with Wintrop and Akron.

Furman's Garland Ferrell posted two eagles on the back nine to lead the field with an opening round four-under, 67. He currently leads by just one stroke over a group of six golfers who finished with a three-under 68.

The Panthers return to the links tomorrow for the second and final day of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Sapphire, N.C.
