The High Point University women’s soccer team dropped a close 1-0 decision to UNC Asheville in Asheville, N.C. Sunday afternoon. With the loss, HPU finishes the regular season with a 5-14-1 record overall and a 4-4-1 record in the Big South.

The Bulldogs took an early lead on a penalty kick by McKenna Stockhausen in the 13th minute. The penalty was called after collision on the right edge of the box.

After withstanding early offensive pressure from the Bulldogs, High Point settled down and began to earn quality scoring chances. In the 36th minute the Panthers appeared to tie the game on a header by senior Ashley Holleran (Peabody, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) but the play was called back due to offsides. Both teams took seven shots in the first half while High Point held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

In the second half, the Panthers continued to press forward looking for an equalizing tally but were unable to find the back of the net.

High Point will next travel to Charleston, S.C., to play in the first round of the Big South Tournament. The Panthers will enter the tournament as the seven seed and play Gardner-Webb in the first round. HPU lost, 1-0, in Boiling Springs, N.C. when the teams met earlier this season.
