Wachovia Women's Report

Each month, Wachovia and High Point University are teaming up to salute High Point's female student-athletes for their achievements in the classroom and on the playing field.

APRIL 2008 - WACHOVIA WOMAN OF THE MONTH
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for April is women's golf student-athlete ANN MARIE DALTON.

Dalton, a senior from Carlow, Ireland, capped her playing career by winning the individual medalist title at the Big South Conference Championship. Trailing by seven shots in the final round, Dalton rallied to force a playoff and then earned the championship crown on the fifth hole of sudden-death play. She became the first HPU golfer to win a Big South Championship. In addition, Dalton was named to the All-Big South squad for the second consecutive season.

A four-year performer for the Panthers, Dalton was the top finisher for the team in every event this year. She posted a career low 78.00 stroke average including a Big South low round of 69 and recorded three Top Five finishes. For her career, Dalton played in 32 events for HPU posting a 79.42 average and earning 12 Top 20 showings.

Off the course, Dalton earned her bachelor's degree in Sports Management in the Spring of 2007 and is just a summer internship shy of earning her Sports Studies master's degree. This season she was named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's golf and earned both Millis Scholar-Athlete and Big South Presidential Honor Roll distinctions for her classroom work.

MARCH 2008 - WACHOVIA WOMAN OF THE MONTH
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for March is women's basketball student-athlete Mackenzie Maier.

Maier, a freshman forward from Charleston, W.Va.,  earned Big South Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-Conference honors for her performance throughout the women's basketball season. Maier was a league-leading four time Big South Freshman of the Week honoree. She led the team in scoring and was the highest ranked freshman in the League in points per game (15.0 ppg), field goal percentage (54.1%), rebounding (5.9 rpg) and blocked shots (2.67 bpg) against Big South opponents.

She led the Panthers to a 3-1 record during the month of March, averaging 10.3 points, pulling down 8.7 rebounds and blocking 2.0 shots per game. Maier helped the Panthers to reach the semi-final round of the Big South Conference Tournament.
 
Off the court, Maier is undecided on a major, but earned Millis Scholar-Athlete honors for her performance in the classroom.

NOVEMBER 2007 - WACHOVIA WOMAN OF THE MONTH
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for November is soccer student-athlete ALEX TORRIERO.

Torriero, a senior defender from Landsdale, Pa., closed her final campaign at HPU on a high note after leading the Panthers to the 2007 Big South Tournament championship and earning an invitation to the NCAA Tournament. She started and played in all 22 games for HPU this season as the anchor of the defensive backline. Her solid play allowed High Point's defense to register seven shutouts this season including a pair of them during their tournament championship run. She capped off her senior season by scoring the game-sealing penalty kick against top-seeded Coastal Carolina in the tournament championship game.

A three-year team captain, Torriero earned her third consecutive Big South postseason honor in 2007 when she was named to the All-Big South first team for the second time in her career. She also garnered a Big South All-Tournament team selection. In addition, Torriero was a member of the Big South All-Academic team and was named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Women's Soccer. She was named a CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District (2nd team) following the conclusion of the season, as well.

Off the field, Torriero is a Sports Management-Business Administration major at HPU and earned both Millis Scholar-Athlete and Big South Presidential Honor Roll distinctions for her classroom work.

SEPTEMBER 2007 - WACHOVIA WOMAN OF THE MONTH
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for September is volleyball student-athlete Jamie Kaufman.

Kaufman, a senior outside hitter from Pacific Palisades, Calif., opened her final campaign at HPU by reaching some historic marks. Just 11 matches into the season, Kaufman became the first Panther in Division I play to record over 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs while also becoming the program's all-time career leader in kills, attacks and service aces. In a match against rival UNC Greensboro, she served a career-best 10 aces and became only the third player in Big South history with over 200 career assists.

The program's first-ever All-Big South first team honoree in 2006, Kaufman grabbed the year's first Big South player of the Week honor after leading HPU to 3-1 mark in their season opening tournament. She has six double-doubles and also posted her first career triple-double against the Spartans. With nine matches of double-digit kills, Kaufman ranks among the Big South leaders in kills per game again this season.

Off the court, Kaufman is a Human Relations major at HPU and earned both Millis Scholar-Athlete and Big South Presidential Honor Roll distinctions for her classroom work.

April 2007 - Wachovia Woman of the Month
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for April is women's track sprinter Jasmine Jones-Green.

Jones-Green, a junior from Sierra Vista, Ariz., ran to a third place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at the Big South Outdoor Track Championships. Her time of 14.11 in the qualifying heat set a new HPU record in the event. Jones-Green also had several other top-five finishes during the month of April including a second place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at the Charlotte Invitational where she broke a four year old school record in the event. One week later, Jones-Green followed up with a first place finish in the event at the Aggie Relays, hosted by N.C. A&T.

Off the track, Jones-Green is a biology major, a Millis Scholar-Athlete and a member of the Big South Presidential Honor Roll.

March 2007 - Wachovia Woman of the Month
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for March is women's tennis player Iris Schabetsberger.

Schabetsberger, a junior from Baden, Austria, made an impact for the Panthers in March, playing primarily in the No. 5 flight. Schabetsberger was 3-1 in Big South singles play during the month and helped the Panthers to a .500 record against league opponents. She took top conference team, Winthrop (7-0 Big South) to three sets and was just short of the victory, falling 10-7 in the final set.

Off the court, Schabetsberger is a business major, a Millis Scholar-Athlete and a Big South Presidential Honor Roll recipient.

February 2007 - Wachovia Woman of the Month
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for February is women's track runner, Sumiyya Hunter.

Hunter, a junior mid-distance runner from Batavia, N.Y. captured the Big South Indoor Track championship in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.01.

In addition to her finish at the Big South meet, Hunter, recorded several top-five finishes during the month of February. She fourth in both the mile and 800-meter at the Carolina Invitational while following that up a week later with a third place finish in the 800-meter at the Carolina Classic.

Off the track, Hunter is a business finance major, a Millis Scholar-Athlete and a Big South Presidential Honor Roll recipient.

January 2007 - Wachovia Woman of the Month
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for January is women's basketball player, Leslie Cook

Cook, a senior guard from High Point, N.C., is scoring in double figures for the Panthers this season, averaging 11.1 points per game last month while pulling down four rebounds per contest.

Cook recorded a career-high 29 points on Dec. 16th against Campbell. She was 10-of-17 from the field for 59% while shooting 6-of-11 from behind the arc for 55%. 

Off the court, Cook is a business finance major and last season earned Third Team Academic All-America and Big South Women's Scholar Athlete of the Year honors.

December 2006 - Wachovia Woman of the Month
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for December is women's basketball player, Candyce Sellars.

Sellars, a senior guard from Burlington, N.C., leads the Panthers with 14.2 points per game in the first month of the season. She is also second on the team in rebounds, averaging 5.2 per game.

Sellars recorded her first career double-double on Nov. 29th against Davidson when she posted 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Sellars has scored in double figures in the Panthers first five games of the 2006-2007 season.

Off the court, Sellars is a sports management major and a Big South Presidential Honor Roll member

November 2006 - Wachovia Woman of the Month
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for November is women’s soccer student-athlete Laura Eldridge.

Eldridge, a freshman forward from Knoxville, Tenn., leads the Panthers with seven goals this season including a pair of game winners. She also tops the squad for points scored with 15. Eldridge was named a member of the Big South Conference All-Freshmen team in a vote of the league’s coaches.

An all-state honoree and two-time All-District selection at West High School, Eldridge was also a member of the State Championship Diadora Impact Club Team as a prep player.

Off the court, Eldridge plans to major in sports management at HPU. She is the daughter of John Eldridge and Nanci Jackson.

October 2006 - Wachovia Woman of the Month
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for October is cross country student-athlete Kali Burt.

Burt, a sophomore from Ontario, Canada has ledthe Panthers to three top-five team finishes during the past month. In the first competition of the season Burt finished eighth at the Wake Forest Relays to lead the team to a third place overall finish.

At the Lou Onesty Invitational hosted by University of Virginia the Panthers placed fifth on the ACC Championship course where Burt had a 14th place finish. On Sept. 23, Burt ran to a second place finish at the Old North State Collegiate Championships to led HPU to the team victory.

Burt was named to the Big South All-Conference team in 2005 and had four top-10 finishes during her first year.

Off the court, Burt is an exercise science major, she is the daughter of Dave and Jan Burt.

September 2006 - Wachovia Woman of the Month
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for September is volleyball student-athlete Audie Gonzalez.

Gonzalez, a freshman outside hitter from Peoria, Ariz., leads the Panthers in kills per game (3.07) and also ranks among the squad’s leader in digs per game (3.57). She has recorded a pair of double-doubles in HPU’s first four matches and has tallied double digit kills in three matches including a personal best 16 in High Point’s win over North Carolina A&T.

A First team All-Region selection at Peoria High School, Gonzalez earned MVP honors at the state All-Star game in 2006. In the classroom she also excelled graduating in the Top 10 percent of her high school class.

Off the court, Gonzalez has not yet selected a major at HPU. She is the daughter of Salvador Gonzalez, Jr. and Audrey Vickers.

December 2005 - Wachovia Woman of the Month
The Wachovia Woman of the Month for December is volleyball player Ashley Mellott

Mellott, a freshman outside hitter from Corbett, Ore., earned Big South Conference All-Freshmen team honors after helping the Panthers to an impressive 16-17 (5-9 Big South) record. During the season, Mellott captured Big South Freshman of the Week honors three times.

One of the team's most consistent hitters, Mellott finished the year ranked second on the team in kills (3.00 kpg) and third in hitting percentage (.225). She finished the season ranked 8th in the Big South for kills and reached double figure kills in 19 matches.

A second-team All-State honor at Gresham High School, Mellott helped lead GHS to back-to-back undefeated records in 2002 and 2003. Her prep squad reached the Final Four of the state championship three times during her career including capturing a state title during her sophomore season.

Off the court, Mellott has not yet selected a major at HPU. She is the daughter of Vincent and Leslie Mellott.

November 2005 - Wachovia Woman of the Month

The Wachovia Woman of the Month for November is cross country runner Kali Burt.

Burt has been a strong competitor for the women's cross country team throughout the season. She finished in the top-five at three meets this season including a first place finish at the East Carolina University Invitational, a second place finish at the Winthrop invitational and a fourth place finish at the Blue Ridge Open.

At the Big South Championships this past weekend, Burt ran to a fourth place finish and earned a spot on the All-Conference team.

Burt is off to good start at HPU in the classroom as well. She is maintaining above a 3.0 GPA at mid-term while taking several upper-level classes.

October 2005 - Wachovia Woman of the Month
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for October is volleyball student-athlete Michelle Feiser.

Feiser, a senior setter/outside hitter from Hagerstown, Md., has been a key reason for the Panthers early season success that features several program firsts including: a regular season Division I tournament title, a road victory at Liberty, a weekend road sweep of Big South opponents (Liberty and Radford). She leads the team in kills and assists, is second in aces and third in digs, and was named to the all-tournament team at all three of HPU's in-season tournaments this season.

Listed among the league leader in several categories, Feiser tops the Big South Conference with six triple-doubles and 13 double-doubles so far this year. She eclipsed the 3,000 assist mark for her career in September and is on pace to possibly reach 1,000 digs by the end of this season.

A two-time All-County selection as a prep player for Smithsburg High School, Feiser helped lead SHS to back-to-back state championships. She was a high school teammate with current Panther teammate Jenelle Stouffer. Feiser began her collegiate career at Fairleigh Dickinson playing two seasons for the Knights.

Off the court, Feiser is an exercise science major an maintains over a 3.7 GPA. A Millis Scholar-Athlete at HPU, she earned Big South Presidential honor roll recognition for her classwork. Feiser also serves as a Panther Student-Athlete mentor. She is the daughter of Mark and Peg Feiser.

September 2005 - Wachovia Woman of the Month
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for September is women's soccer student-athlete Traci Andersen.

Andersen, a junior forward from Hayes, Va., has been the team's leading scorer this season posting three goals over the first three games. She has been responsible for the game winning score in each of HPU's victories and her goal in the 7th minute against the Citadel on Aug. 28 marked not only the season's first goal for the Panthers but also her first career goal. Andersen finished that game with a pair of scores.

She leads the team and the Big South conference in points for the season and his found the back of the net on three of her five shots on goal. In addition, Andersen owns a 3.95 cumulative GPA and has amassed two perfect 4.0 semester GPA scores during her career.

A Three-time All-District selection as a prep player for Gloucester High School, Andersen also garnered, All-Region and honorable-mention All-State accolades. She scored 29 goals and had 12 assists her senior year at GHS.

Off the field, Andersen is an exercise science major and the daughter of Michael and Donna Andersen.

April 2005-Wachovia Woman of the Month
The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for April is women's basketball student-athlete Raven Truslow.

Truslow, a freshman forward from Charlottesville, Va., was named to the League's All-Freshman Team and recorded a career-high 20 points against UNC Asheville on March 11 in the semifinals of the 2005 Advance Auto Parts Big South Women's Basketball Championships.

Truslow was named Big South Conference New Balance Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week on Feb. 14, 2005.

Truslow averaged 6.1 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest this season while starting 21 of 29 contests. Her numbers jump to 7.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game against Big South opponents.

Off the court, Truslow is a elementary education major and the daughter of Ken Hobbs and Lisa Truslow.

March 2005-Wachovia Woman of the Month

The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for March is women's tennis student-athlete Connie Wicks from Alexandria, Va.

Wicks, a senior and graduate of West Potomac High School, is a three-year letterwinner, and has played a large part in two of the Panthers' victories this season. Her three-set win over Campbell's Colen Gore on Feb. 22 clinched the match and gave the Panthers a 4-3 win over the Camels. On Feb. 25, Wicks captured her singles match in straight sets and teamed with Sarah McDonaugh for a doubles win in HPU's Big South Conference-opening 7-0 victory over UNC Asheville.

Off the court, Wicks is a High Point University Presidential Scholar with a double-major in management information systems and accounting, carrying a grade-point average of 3.82. She is also a member of HPU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a Big South Presidential Honor Roll member and a Millis Scholar-Athlete. Wicks is the daughter of Mike and Kathy Wicks, and has three sisters: Jody, Megan and Daria.

February 2005-Wachovia Woman of the Month

The Wachovia Woman of the Month for February is women's basketball student-athlete Candyce Sellars.

Sellars, a sophomore guard from Burlington, N.C., averages 6.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game for the Panthers, who have won six of their last eight games and are currently alone in second place in the Big South Conference. Sellars scored a season-high 15 points in a 62-61 win over Gardner-Webb on Jan. 17, including a running 10-footer in the final seconds to lift the Panthers to victory.

All in all, Sellars has reached double-figures in four games this season. She averaged 11.3 points in parts of four games in 2003-04 (including a career-best 20 points in a win over Murray State) before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

Sellars earned Burlington Times-News Player of the Year honors her senior season at Western Alamance High School in Burlington, and was the North State Conference Player of the Year and featured in Who's Who Among American High School Students.

Off the court, Sellars is a sport management major and a Millis Scholar-Athlete, and the daughter of Rickey and Elaine Sellars.

January 2005-Wachovia Woman of the Month

The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for January is women's basketball student-athlete Emily Mills.

Mills, a senior forward from Roswell, Ga., is in her fourth year on the Panther squad and recorded career-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds against Indiana State on Dec. 19.

She is currently High Point's third-leading scorer (8.5 ppg), third-leading rebounder (5.6 rpg) and leading three-point shooter (41 percent) while shooting 42 percent from the field overall. Mills has started all ten games for the Panthers this season.

For her career, Mills has appeared in 90 games while starting 37 and has scored 343 points and pulled down 273 rebounds while shooting 37 percent from the field.

Off the court, Mills is a Big South Presidential Honor Roll member and Millis Scholar-Athlete, and the daughter of Ray and Nancy Mills.

December 2004-Wachovia Woman of the Month


The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for December is volleyball student-athlete Ashley Johnson.

Johnson, a freshman middle blocker from Alexandria, Ind., was named to the 2004 All-Big South Freshman Team on Nov. 19. She averaged 2.47 kills and 0.72 blocks per game and a team-high .232 hitting percentage.

For the season, Johnson collected 291 kills and a team-best 85 blocks and developed into one of the team's most consistent players. She reached double-figures in kills in 14 matches.

The Panthers won 17 games in 2004, which more than doubled the school record for wins in a season since joining the NCAA Division I ranks.

Before coming to High Point, Johnson played four seasons at Alexandria Monroe High School. While at Alexandria Monroe, she was a three year All-Conference pick and four year All-County selection. She also was a three-time team Most Valuable Player, an All-Star for one year, Madison County Player of the Year in 2003, and played at the club level for Munciana Volleyball Club.

Off the court, Johnson is an education major, and the daughter of Douglas and Dedie Johnson.

November 2004-Wachovia Woman of the Month

The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for November is volleyball student-athlete Kim Anderson.

Anderson, a senior libero from Rio Vista, Calif., has recorded at least 10 digs in each of her last 34 matches, which is the nation's fifth-longest streak. She is averaging 5.07 digs per game, which ranks second in the Big South Conference, and is fifth in the League in service aces per game (0.45).

Anderson has recorded 20 or more digs in nine matches this season, including 28 digs in the Panthers' most-recent contest (against UNC Asheville). She has helped the Panthers to a Division I school-record 16 victories with four regular-season matches still to play.

Before coming to High Point, Anderson played two seasons at Delta College in Stockton, Calif. While at Delta, she was an All-Conference selection and led her team to the state championship game and a 52-5 record in two seasons. Anderson was the Sacramento Valley Most Valuable Player in 2000 and a two-time All-League selection at Rio Vista High School.

Off the court, Anderson is a sport management major, and the daughter of Jack and Linda Anderson.

October 2004-Wachovia Woman of the Month

The Wachovia Woman of the Month honoree for October is women's soccer student-athlete Hannah Nail.

Nail, a freshman goalkeeper from Greensboro, N.C., leads the Big South Conference in  goals-against average (0.90). She has 29 saves in eight games (.800 save percentage), which ranks third in the Conference. Officially, Nail has two shutouts (against Winthrop and Longwood), but combined with teammate Courtney Noel for a third in a 5-0 blanking of VMI.

Nail has allowed one goal or less in eight of nine contests this season for the defending-Big South champion Panthers, who currently reside atop the Big South standings with a 2-0-0 mark (5-4-0 overall).

Before coming to High Point, Nail led Southeast Guilford HS to a conference title and was a three-year All-Region and All-Conference selection. Nail also played club soccer for the Greensboro Twisters, helping the team win the Region III Premier League title and Southern Regional championship, as well as a second-place state finish and third-place national finish.

Off the field, Nail is a speical education major and works with Urban Ministry. She is the daughter of Jim and Kathy Nail.

September 2004-Wachovia Women of the Month

The Wachovia Women of the Month for September are High Point women's golfers Julie Ethier, Kate O'Sullivan (both sophomores), and juniors Anni Svensson and Lena Svensson.  The foursome represented HPU on the 2003-04 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team.

The selection criteria used by the NGCA are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative grade-point average is 3.50, and eligible student-athletes must have competed in at least 66% of their school's regularly-scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

All four are Millis Scholar-Athletes and Big South Presidential Honor Roll members. Ethier is from Navan, Ontario, Canada, and has been ranked among the top 25 players in her home country. Her best finish in her freshman season was a 26th place effort at the Lady Terrier Intercollegiate. Scottish product O'Sullivan, a physical education major, had three top-15 finishes her freshman year, including a ninth place finish at the Southern Shootout.

Twin sisters Anni and Lena Svensson, from Upplands Vasby, Sweden, are also members of the HPU's Big South-champion women's soccer squad. Anni became the first women's golfer in school history to earn All-Big South honors, is a computer information systems major with a minor in
