High Point University students have shown great interest in club sports, and the University has responded by increasing club sports offerings from five to 19 over the past two years. This past year, over 400 HPU students participated in club sports at various levels.
MEN'S BASKETBALL

The men’s basketball club team holds tryouts every fall and anyone who wishes is welcome to attend. The teams practices 1-2 times a week in the Slane Center. Both teams play a year round schedule against several club teams in the area including UNC Greensboro and Elon. Games are played on the weekends in the Slane Center.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BRAZILIAN JIUJITSU

The HPU Brazilian JiuJitsu club team returns for its second season in Spring 2012. The team is open to all interested students who want to learn this sport . Members will have the opportunity to compete in local and national BJJ events in addition to other training opportunities. Coached by: Steve Snyder, Brown Belt (BJJ), and Dr. Tony Kemerly, Brown Belt (BJJ), who are both under Mr. Robson Moura and the internationally recognized team, Nova Uniao.

The 2011-12 season will mark the second season of competitive events for the High Point University equestrian team. The team will compete as a member of the IHSA against other teams in the region including such squads as Appalachian State and Wake Forest. The club features Hunt Seat and Western riders and is open to all skill levels.
WOMEN'S FIELD HOCKEY

The HPU field hockey club team is entering its fifth year of competition in 2011. A fall sport, the team plays 8-10 games against such regional club teams as Duke, Elon, Wake and Clemson. The HPU Field Hockey club team is coached by Tara Shollenberger, who played collegiately at Franklin Pierce. The team is a member of the National Field Hockey League and last season ranked second in the region.

Open to players of all skill levels, the team will play matches against local club teams as well as in tournaments where they can compete as individuals. Their home course is High Point Country Club at Emerywood.

The HPU men’s lacrosse club team will return for the fifth season in 2011-12. The team is coached by Roger Davis, who played in the ACC at Virginia. Home games are played at the fully lit club field located on the athletic campus of HPU. The team has played such club teams as NC State, recent national champion Elon and Wake Forest. Individuals interested in joining the team should email Coach Davis.

This is the fourth season for both the men’s and women’s club soccer teams. The men’s team is coached by Greg Giardano who played a Messiah College. The women’s team is coached by Sara Giardano, who played Messiah College. The team plays its games at the fully lit club field located on the athletic campus of High Point University. Both teams play a schedule that features local club teams as well as some college’s JV squads.

The HPU club softball team returns for its second season in 2011-12. The team is coached by Angela Tressel, who played Div. I softball at Bradley University and previously coached collegiate varsity softball. The team will use softball facilities owned by the City of High Point.

The HPU club swimming team is open to students of all skill levels. The team practices 1-2 days per week in the pool at the Millis Center. The HPU club swimming team hosts several meets per year featuring teams such as NC State, Wake Forest, Liberty and UNC Greensboro. The team also travels at least once per semester.

The HPU club tennis is open to players of all levels with the top 6-10 players earning spots on the travelling team. The team practices and competes on campus at the High Point University tennis courts next to the Millis Center. The club tennis team practices 1-2 times per week and is coached by Dr. Joe Ellenburg. The team plays competitions against local club teams from nearby schools such as Elon and Davidson.

The men’s volleyball club team holds tryouts in the fall which anyone who is interested in playing can participate in. The team practices 2-3 days a week in the Slane Center. The team has a year-long schedule, hosting at least one tournament in the fall, and then traveling to local schools such as UNC Charlotte, UNC Chapel Hill, and NC State throughout the year.
