Head women's golf coach
Vici Pate Flesher announced the addition of two new golfers on Thursday with Casey Ward and Sathita (Tan) Cheeranont set to join the squad for the 2012-13 season.
"The women's golf team at High Point University is thrilled to welcome two quality players and young women into our program," Flesher said. "Both Casey and Tan bring considerable experience to our team and will both be program changers. We are excited they will be joining us next Fall."
Ward attends Cedar Ridge High School in Chapel Hill, N.C. where she competes on the men's golf team. Ward was named a Carolina 9 Men's All-Conference honoree in 2010 and 2011 and is currently ranked in the girl's top 100 on the National Junior Golf Scoreboard's rankings. Ward won the North Carolina Trusted Choice Big I Tournament and went on to finish fourth in the National Trusted Choice Big I Tournament in Mississippi, where she fired a hole-in-one.
"Casey has always been a talented golfer," Flesher added. "The last two years her abilities have taken her into the National spotlight. Casey is one of the most liked people I have met and after watching her the past two summers I can honestly say that I have heard nothing but positive comments about her. I know she will work hard on the course and in the classroom."
Cheeranont is from Bangkok, Thailand and spent her junior year as a foreign exchange student at Wawasee High School in Syracuse, IN. Cheeranont set a Wawasee High School record after shooting a 69 at the Stonehendge Tournament which she won in 2010 and was named an all-Northern Lakes Conference selection as well. She also won the Indiana South District Qualifier for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship in 2011. Despite only playing one season, Cheeranont was named to the Wawasee High School Hall of Fame.
In Thailand, Cheeranont was named MVP of the Bangkok International Schools Athletics Conference in 2007 and 2008 and finished 6th place in the Ladies Golf Association of Thailand's Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open at the age of 15. In 2010, Cheeranont won the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Tour Thailand Qualifier.
"Tan is a special young lady who has impeccable mechanics and a driving passion for the game of golf," Flesher said. "She will make an impact immediately. Tan is also an excellent student and a caring person who will add more than just low scores to our team."
The High Point University women's golf team returns to action in the spring of 2012.
