Incoming WBB freshmen play in state All-Star games

Incoming freshmen Cheyanne Parker and Carter Williams of the High Point University women's basketball team each finished their prep careers by taking part in their state all-star games. Parker played in the North Carolina East-West Game while Williams played in the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Game.

“We are proud of both Carter's and Cheyenne's accomplishments in high school,” HPU women's basketball coach Tooey Loy said. “This is another example of the quality student-athletes coming into our program each year. We look forward to having Carter and Cheyenne continue their success at here at HPU.”

At the East-West game, Parker earned a starting spot with the West team and led all players with 13 rebounds to help her team to a 62-55 win. She also scored six points and had two blocks in the contest.

“It was a great experience and I had a lot of fun,” Parker said. “It was nice getting the start, I found out today before the game and was really excited and nervous. I also really enjoyed getting to meet different players from all over the state.”

Parker is the fifth HPU player in the last four years to play in the East-West Game as sophomore Jazmin Cromartie played in the 2009 game, junior Shamia Brown played in the 2008 game and seniors Amy Dodd and Jurica Hargraves each played in the 2007 game.

Williams scored 13 points in the VHSCA All-Star game but her West All-Star team lost 88-81. Williams was the second-leading scorer for the West All-Stars despite coming off the bench in the game.

It was one of the best experiences I have had,” Williams said. “I have played either with or against all the girls that were there. It was cool to get to know everyone. People are a lot nicer off the court than they are on the court, especially when they are competing for something. “

High Point finished 17-14 on the season with a 9-7 mark in the Big South. The 17 wins are the most for HPU since the 2006-07 season when the team went 18-12. High Point also earned its first win over an SEC opponent in the team's division I era with a 75-68 win over Florida. The Panthers return four starters next season and seven of their top eight scorers.
