Dougherty leads HPU to first-place tie at day one of Lonnie Barton

DAY ONE RESULTS

The High Point University men's golf team finished the first round of the Lonnie Barton Invitational tied for first place with a combined team score of 318 on Monday at the Savannah Quarters Country in Savannah, Ga. Junior DJ Dougherty ended the day tied for sixth with a team-best score of 78.

Dougherty shot 39 on both the front and back nine to finish the day as the low Panther scorer. Both sophomore Curtis Brotherton and freshman Chase Wilson finished one stroke behind Dougherty with identical first-round scores of 79 to tie for eighth. Junior Evan LaRocque shot an opening round 82 to finish tied for 20th while junior Nick Goins rounded out the HPU scorers with an 18-hole score of 88 to finish tied for 37th.

High Point is tied with Bryant University atop the team standings after the first round of play. The two schools are just one stroke ahead of both Longwood and Laval which both shot a combined 319 in the first round to end the day tied for third. Host Long Island University rounds out the top five at the end of the first day with a combined team score of 331.

Emory University's Ryan Dagerman and Georgia Southern's Logan Blondell are currently tied atop the Individual standings with identical opening-round scores of 74. They hold a two-stroke advantage over Laval's Steevin Hovington, who recorded an 18-hole score of 76 on the tournament's first day.

The Panthers will attempt to win their first team title of the season tomorrow when they return to the links for the second and final day of the Lonnie Barton Invitational.
