Roberts named Big South Conference Player of the Week

Junior right fielder Nate Roberts was named Big South Conference's Choice Hotels Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Roberts hit .615 in the series against Towson and had a 5-5 game on Friday with three home runs.

“Nate really led the charge for us offensively this weekend,” said head coach Craig Cozart. “He is one of many players swinging the bat very well right now. We are proud of the teams performance thus far.”

Roberts is the first Panther since 2005 to hit three home runs in a game. Josh Cotton did it on March 15, 2005 at East Carolina. In the first inning Roberts took the 1-0 pitch from Towson's Nate Curd over the opposite field wall for a two-run homer, scoring Murray White IV who had singled up the middle.

In the bottom of the sixth Roberts took the first pitch he saw from Curd over the right field wall. Roberts final home run came in the five-run seventh inning. Austin Hurd came in to relieve Curd and with White at first base, Roberts took another 1-0 pitch out of the stadium for his third homer of the game. He added two singles to finish the day 5-5 with six RBI.

Roberts finished the weekend 8-13 with eight RBI and eight runs scored. He has a 1.308 slugging percentage and .688 on base percentage for the weekend. He also stole two bases in the series, bringing his total on the season to eight, good for second best in the conference. He also leads the Big South in on base percentage (.595) and runs scored (17).

Defensively, Roberts also prevented a run on Saturday, throwing out a guy at home plate who tried to tag up and score from third base on a deep fly ball.

High Point hosts Richmond on Tuesday and Wednesday for a midweek series. Tuesday's game begins at 6 p.m.
