Junior Mackenzie Maier (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) of the High Point University women’s basketball team was named as a member of the 2009-10 Big South All-Academic team the conference announced on Thursday. Maier, a Special Education major has a 3.74 grade-point average and leads the conference in blocks.

Maier is a three-time Millis Scholar-Athlete. She is currently first in the conference and eighth in the country in blocked shots per game with 3.0 per game. Maier’s 88 blocks this season broke her own HPU Division I single-season record of 84 from last year and is the second-highest total in Big South history. The Charleston, W.Va., native also holds High Point’s Division I career blocks record with 219 and needs 75 to become the all-time leader in the Big South. Maier also third on the team this season in both scoring (9.1 ppg) and rebounding (4.9 rpg). She is currently fifth on both HPU Division I career records lists and is on pace to become just the second High Point player to get 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in the Division I era.

The Panthers are the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Big South Women’s Basketball tournament and will play No. 6 Winthrop at the Millis Center on Friday. The game is the second of the two-game evening session and will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m., following the matchup between No. 2 Liberty and No. 7 Radford. HPU finished the regular season with a 16-13 overall record and a 9-7 record in the Big South.
