Last Time Out: The Panthers recovered from a season-opening loss to Navy with a 73-50 win over Youngstown State on Saturday, Nov. 14. Junior Mackenzie Maier blocked five shots to become HPU’s Division I career blocks leader with 136. The team jumped out to a 27-7 lead in the opening ten minutes of the game against the Penguins and maintained that lead throughout the rest of the game, never allowing YSU to pull within 16 points. Maier led all HPU scorers for the second consecutive night with 16 points while sophomore Shamia Brown scored 15 off the bench. Junior Amy Dodd tied a career high with a team-leading nine rebounds. High Point’s bench gave the Panthers a big advantage, outscoring the YSU reserves 38-1 in the contest. Junior Jurica Hargraves scored eight points from the bench and both senior Ashlee’ Samuels and freshman Laura Whitt chipped in 4 to go along with Brown’s 15. Maier passed Mary Brewer (1999-02), who had 134 career rejections, to claim the Division I career blocks record.
