Mission Statement and
Philosophies and Goals

The mission of the intercollegiate athletic program is to support the educational goals of High Point University. The University understands participation in intercollegiate athletics in its relationship to the development of student-athletes, and as such, it is integrally related to their eductional experience. Intercollegiate athletics is of significant value to the University in the development of character, leadership, sportsmanship and responsible decision-making.

High Point University has a long tradition of success in intercollegiate athletics. The institution sees athletic excellence in the context of its mission and purpose. The University provides its students with a holistic educational experience. It affirms the value of physical as well as spiritual, intellectual and emotional well being. Intercollegiate athletics establishes a framework in which students can confirm values, practice teamwork, develop sportsmanship and experience personal responsibility.

High Point Univesity provides an equitable, diverse and competitive intercolleigate athletic program. It is properly administered, educationally sound, and a resource for university life and the greater High Point community. The philosophy of the University and its athletic program is:

1. to adhere to the principles for conduct of intercolleigate athletics as defined by the NCAA and Big South Conference, including sportsmanship, ethical conduct, rules compliance and amateurism;

2. to treat prospective and current student-athletes according to regularly established prolcies and programs applicable to all prospective students or current students consistent with Big South Confernce and NCAA regulations;

3. to address responsibly, carefully, and completely all inquiries from potential students or student-athletes;

4. to encourage the academic development of student-athletes and to maintain academic averages, retention rates, and graduation rates equal to or greater than comparable averages for the student body as a whole;

5. to promote wellness by encouraging the health, moral, physical, emotional and social welfare of student-athletes;

6. to provide gender-equity in intercollegiate athletic programs and to otherwise encourage diversity and inclusiveness;

7. to be competitive in the Big South Conference and in the pursuit of NCAA Division I national recognition;

8. to provide athletic facilities which are appropriate, attractive, adequate, and safe and to encourage the usage thereof by all members of the High Point University community;

9. to encourage community on campus through the intercollegiate athletic programand to support the goals established for educational support services and campus life;

10. to support the work of institutional advancement by providing athletic entertainment for the High Point University community, alumni, and other friends of the University and by enabling them to support the University through affiliation with the intercollegiate athletic program;

11. to provide human resources sufficient to support officially established intercolleigate athletic programs;

12. to assure administrative oversight of the intercolleigate athletic program through the formal involvement of the faculty and the administration, including the President of the University, who has ultimate responsibility for the athletic program;

13. to assure that sufficient funding in operating budgets and athletic grants-in-aid are provided to be a competitive Division I athletic program;

14. to assure administrative control of fiscal operations, including, but not limited to, funds raised or expended, internally or externally, in support of athletic programs, facilities, scholarships, grants-in-aid, loans, and student employment.

15. to provide annually an external audit of the athletic program, including, but not limited to, the High Point University Panther Club;

16. to assess the intercollegiate athletic program regularly in order to ensure that the program supports the education of athletes, the goals and objectives established for the athletic program, and the educational purposes of the institution; and

17. to assure that the results of assessment are incorporated into departmental and administrative planning.

The Mission Statement and Philosophy and Goals of Intercollegiate Athletics was reviewed and revised by the Faculty Athletic Committee during 2002-2003. University approval was given on February 25, 2003.
